Evenson, South Dakota State University, Ashok Agarwal, The Cleveland Clinic Foundation Objective: The incidence of leukocytospermia ranges from 10% to 20% among infertile men. However, the role of leukocytospermia in the pathogenesis of male infertility remains highly controversial. Our study evaluated the relationship between leukocytospermia and standard semen parameters, levels of seminal reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the extent of sperm nuclear DNA damage.

Reactive oxygen species and sperm DNA damage in infertile men presenting with low level leukocytospermia

BACKGROUND Leukocytes contribute directly and indirectly to reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Although leukocytospermia is defined as the presence of ≥ 1 × 106 white blood cells/mL (WBC/mL) in a semen sample, the presence of less than 1×10(6) WBC/mL (low-level leukocytospermia) can still produce a detectable amount of ROS, impairing sperm function and lowering the chances of pregnancy. ...

P-13: Comparison of Sperm Quality, Oxidative Stress, DNA Fragmentation, Protamine Deficiency, and DNA Methylation in Varicocele and Fertile Individuals

s:1993:"Background: There are many approaches that gene expression is controlled in eukaryotes. DNA methylation is one of several epigenetic mechanisms that cells use to control gene expression and lock genes in the "off" position. In addition, sperm DNA damage can correlate with DNA methylation defect. There is evidence that sperm of infertile men contain more DNA damage than fertile men and t...

One of the main events associated with varicocele is excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), an antioxidant that scavenges free radicals, is considered a supplement to alleviate glutathione (GSH) depletion during oxidative stress. Despi...
